The Lot Radio

A hub for NYC independent radio

The idea was simple: take a 20-foot shipping container, place it on a vacant lot in Brooklyn, and repurpose it into a hub for independent radio, complete with a DJ stand, coffee shop, and bar. And with that, The Lot Radio was born.

Ten years on, The Lot Radio has cemented its place at the vanguard of New York’s vibrant music scene, broadcasting a wide range of styles and hosting DJs from all around the world. Yet its vast archive of tens of thousands of recorded sets had never before been made accessible to a wider audience. Our new website brings this exciting library online for the first time—and, in the process, introduces The Lot Radio to new listeners everywhere.

Press play

The new site makes The Lot Radio’s sessions accessible like never before. A custom-built video player forms the core of the site, and includes airplay support, queue management, volume persistence, and a mechanism for seamless switching between multiple live streams and recorded video. When a live stream ends, the recording is available online mere moments later.

Artists at the center

In addition to the music player, the website features dedicated new detail pages for every artist, musician, and DJ who has ever played at The Lot, presenting their biographies, recorded sessions, and produced tracks with searchable clarity. New calendar and chat room features further emphasize The Lot Radio’s role as a nexus for New York City’s music community.

Features that music lovers love

To make The Lot Radio’s recordings even more accessible, the site clips each livestream through a sophisticated automated workflow that transcodes video, selects thumbnails, and identifies and names individual tracks. This data is then auto-populated in the site’s CMS, making it immediately queryable for music lovers and first-time listeners alike.
